Content Outline

The last project is finally here. So, to structure my reflection on my writing process and experience this past semester, here is an outline of the content of my video essay.

  1. Opening
    1. How to grab the reader’s attention
      1. Explain context of why I am talking about this
        1. Taking english my freshman year of college
      2. Relate to reader
        1. It takes everybody a while to figure out how their brain works best
        2. This was me figuring that out
  2. Writing Process
    1. Structure and how it has changed
      1. I have begun to use an outline for all of my essays
        1. What does this prove?
          1. I used to not use outlines so the addition of the outlines is a positive change
        2. Why does this matter?
          1. I am better able to organize my work
      2. My time management has improved from this because it adds an extra step to the process of writing an essay so I spend more time on it
        1. What does this prove?
          1. There has been a change since I started this class
        2. Why does this matter?
          1. It has positively influenced my time management and productivity by helping me to be more proactive
  3. New things in the writing process
    1. The unfamiliar - learning new technology, adapting to unfamiliar situations, public speaking
      1. Using Garageband was an adjustment that took me quite a few hours of YouTube tutorials to really figure out
        1. I’m sure there will be a similar adjustment period as I prepare to make this video essay
        2. What does this prove?
          1. There was a fancy piece of technology I had no Idea how to use but I figured it out and successfully made a podcast
        3. Why does this matter?
          1. It was a new experience that I figured out throughout my time in English 109H but I will be able to use my new Garageband skills in the future
      2. Reaching out to professors during the interview portion of the course was a new and weird experience. I had never been in a situation like that before. I was uncomfortable to begin with but, obviously, I did it anyway and made it out alive.
        1. Leadership
          1. Took leadership, initiative, and proactivity to do all this
        2. What does this prove?
          1. New situation, new people, and a new type of interaction (interviewing someone) that I figured out during english
        3. Why does this matter?
          1. Interviews and other sorts of professional interactions are incredibly important to life (at least if you plan on working for a living) so the skills I obtained from this experience will help me in my professional career
      3. I’ve never been a huge fan of public speaking but through the podcasts (and most likely through the process of making this video essay) I’ve become more comfortable with recording myself.
        1. What does this prove?
          1. My public speaking skills developed some
        2. Why does this matter?
          1. Public speaking is another important life thing that will be helpful throughout my career
  4. Finishing the Writing Process
    1. Finishing assignments - research, editing & revision, collaborating with peers
      1. Making the sources was a bitch but it resulted in well thought out arguments that had a diverse body of supporting evidence
        1. What does this prove?
          1. I have improved my research skills
        2. Why does this matter?
          1. It will help me to better understand things in the future and make well informed and intelligent arguments when doing research
      2. It’s one thing to do local grammatical revisions of your own work but looking at it on a global scale and revising the overall message is much easier with the help of peers. You can’t always see the ideas you gloss over or the holes in your argument on your own.
        1. What does this prove?
          1. I learned the value of peer review
        2. Why does this matter?
          1. In the future, when I am writing or creating something, I will reach out to other people for their feedback because I understand why that matters
  5. Life affects the writing process
    1. It’s hard to make intelligent life decisions
      1. I set up my schedule so that I would have ridiculously long days Monday through Thursday (12-16 hours on campus when I live off campus). This made getting enough sleep, eating well, keeping up with assignments, and all that jazz quite difficult. However, I learned that I work best if I frontload the structured part of my day. So I can structure my schedules accordingly in the future.
        1. What does this prove?
          1. At the beginning of the semester when we made our weekly schedules I thought my schedule was arranged brilliantly. I have since learned that I was not just wrong, but incredibly wrong.
        2. Why does this matter?
          1. I now know that I don’t like starting my day late and I don’t like having a few crazy long days in order to have an extra day off

  1. Now that English 109H is over...
    1. How to explain larder significance to the reader
      1. I have learned a lot about the way my brain works and how I work best. I am still developing my work ethic but I have come a long way in understanding what works and what doesn’t.
      2. Pretty much everything I have learned this semester is relevant to my future life and career in some way.
