My Sources

  1. Throughout my research compiling sources for my quick reference guide, I continue to analyze the importance, audience, and context of each. Here is a continued analysis of the aforementioned qualities.

    This source comes from CNET which is an American media website that publishes new on technology and consumer electronics globally. It is owned by CBS Interactive which is a division of the CBS Corporation. CBS’s widespread popularity and consistency gives it considerable credibility.
    Who is the author of the source? What can you find out about their credentials, background, and public presence online? How does this information affect the source's credibility?

    Roger Cheng is the author of this source. He is the executive editor of breaking news for CNET. He has worked with CNET since 2011. Prior to that he worked at various other news agencies. He graduated from the University of Southern California with a B.A. in Journalism in 2001 after spending a few years at Pasadena City College after graduation high school in 1997. It appears as though his life since graduation high school has largely been dedicated to journalism. Because of his history with news and his education, he seems to be an accredited author.

    When did the source come out? What else was going on in the world during that day, or week, or month that could have some effect or impact on this controversy? How does the specific time period play into the story?

    The article was published in May of 2015. Due to the recent publication, the events regarding female involvement in technology were similar to those of today. There is a constant press for elimination of all types of discrimination with a focus on discrimination of women. This article responds to that and contributes to the mass movement towards eradication of male supremacy.

    This source offers my project a liberal and logical view on the lack of involvement of women in technology. Additionally, the inclusion of census data on the percentage of involvement of women in technical positions in different companies as well as, of those women, the number of women in positions of leadership. This will help to begin to clear up the misunderstandings around the exact numbers contributing to the discrepancy in the treatment of women as compared to men in technology fields.

    This source comes from PBS. A source that focuses on that value of diverse and educated opinions. Because of PBS’s longstanding credibility, it is an exceptional source to get evidence from.

    Denise cummings is a research psychologist and author who has held faculty and research positions at Yale, University of California, and other prestigious universities. She is an ardent blogger who has published many articles on PBS and Psychology Today. Due to her heavy involvement online and in research, she appears to be especially credible.

    When did the source come out? What else was going on in the world during that day, or week, or month that could have some effect or impact on this controversy? How does the specific time period play into the story?

    This article came out in April of 2015. Like the previous source, the constancy of this issue and the recentness of the article’s publication result in similar circumstances. There is a continued push towards gender equality in the workplace now, as well as when this was published.

    This source offers a comparison between women in other STEM fields as compared to the field of specifically technology. While there have been increases in the involvement of women in Social Sciences and Biosciences, there is still a disportionate involvement of women as compared to men in technology. This will give my readers perspective.

    The source is from Huffington Post, a liberal news source. Because of its consistent accuracy and widespread popularity, it is a credible source.

    Amy Nguyen is a student at Stanford majoring in Computer Science. She already has a job lined up after graduation with Pinterest. Because of her obvious involvement in technology and dedication to her education, she is a reliable and especially relevant source.

    When did the source come out? What else was going on in the world during that day, or week, or month that could have some effect or impact on this controversy? How does the specific time period play into the story?

    This article was published in June of 2015. Like the previous sources, the constancy of discrimination against women in the workplace raises the importance of articles dealing with these issues.

    What information does the source offer your project? Which stakeholders does it represent? What contextual information does it offer you? Why is it important to your project?

    This article offers insight into the background of how this discrepancy begins. By providing information about the information given to girls as they are growing up as compared to the information given to boys, the audience can see how this lack of involvement is started. It can provide some history.

    The source comes from The Onion. Because of The Onion’s notoriety for satire, the reader knows to take what is said with a grain of salt. The fact that this is so unreliable gives it a sort of credibility. In hours of research this is the only article I could find against increasing female involvement in STEM fields.

    I could not find an author on the article. However, from my research on the Wikipedia page, there are a few select recurring authors. It is probably that one of these authors wrote this article. Nevertheless, this detracts from its credibility.

    This article was published in May 2014. As this is the furthest back any sources so far have gone, it shows more history of the piece. It is not necessarily a response to a specific event but more of a momentous push towards gender equality.

    What information does the source offer your project? Which stakeholders does it represent? What contextual information does it offer you? Why is it important to your project?

    Because of the fact that this was the only source against the need to increase the number of women involved in STEM, it shows the push for gender equality and encouragement of women. However, it begs the question, what is it that is still stopping us?

    The source comes from The Guardian. According to its Wikipedia page, it was founded in 1821 as a local paper but has since expanded to provide the world with news. Its history and reliability positively affect its credibility.

    Emine Sander has been a feature writer for the Guardian since at least 2012. She is an English Writer. He history with the Guardian suggests a fair amount of credibility.

    the specific time period play into the story?

    This story came out in May of 2013. This continues to show the persistence of the issue of gender equality and sexism.

    The source offers some insight into Ullman’s experience as a female in a world of technology as it describes some of the sexism she endured.

    The source comes from the New York Times, a historically credible source.

    Who is the author of the source? What can you find out about their credentials, background, and public presence online? How does this information affect the source's credibility?

    Claire Cain Miller graduated from both Yale and UC Berkeley and has since been writing for the New York Times as well as other news sources. She focuses on issues of gender, economics, politics, and everyday life. Due to her her educational history and er experience writing, she is likely a very credible source.

    When did the source come out? What else was going on in the world during that day, or week, or month that could have some effect or impact on this controversy? How does the specific time period play into the story?

    The source came out in April of 2014. Similar to the previous articles, the issues of discrimination are persistent so the times that these articles are written are largely due to a persistent issue rather than singular controversial events.

    This article provides a personal insight into the difficulties of being a woman in a man-dominated field. The attrition rate for women in technology fields is high. This is arguably due to the difficulty of stomaching the rampant sexism within the field.

    The Anita Borg Institute is an organizations that specializes in issues of women in technology, gearing research towards understanding how the lack of involvement began, how it is perpetuated, and how to make changes. Because of this specialization, this source is not only relevant but also credible.

    Kate Carey graduated from Washington University and now works with Allison+Partners as an Account Executive. She is very involved in technology fields as her job deals frequently with technology. Due to her involvement, she is a credible source.

    When did the source come out? What else was going on in the world during that day, or week, or month that could have some effect or impact on this controversy? How does the specific time period play into the story?

    This came out in September of 2013. This continues to show the persistence of discrimination of women in the workplace and the continually growing movement to make changes to that pattern.

    This shows some of the statistics about retention rates of women in technology as compared to men in technology as well as pointing towards different ways to affect those rates.

    The source come from Business Insider, a business news source which deals frequently with news surrounding technology. Its reliable history as well as its widespread popularity positively affect its credibility.

    Jennifer Welsh graduated from UC Santa Cruz and Notre Dame and then moved on to work as the first science editor at Tech Insider. Her involvement in technology and her involvement writing for an online news source give her considerable credibility.

    When did the source come out? What else was going on in the world during that day, or week, or month that could have some effect or impact on this controversy? How does the specific time period play into the story?

    The article was published in October of 2013, continuing to show the issue of sexism in the worlplace .

    What information does the source offer your project? Which stakeholders does it represent? What contextual information does it offer you? Why is it important to your project?

    This source shows the background of how women are excluded from the tech industry - from stereotypes growing up to teasing. This provides the reader insight into how discrimination is perpetuated.

    This source comes from CNBC, a business-oriented news source. CNBC’s historical reliability and popularity positively affect its credibility.

    Who is the author of the source? What can you find out about their credentials, background, and public presence online? How does this information affect the source's credibility?

    Reshma Saujani studied at many universities including Harvard and Yale. She founded the Organization Girls Who Code which specializes in training and encouraging girls to work in computing. She is featured on many different news sources including CNBC, MSNBC, and FOX. Her educational and professional history indicate a strong credibility.

    The source came out in August of 2015. This continues to show the size of the movement to eradicate gender disparity in the workplace.

    What information does the source offer your project? Which stakeholders does it represent? What contextual information does it offer you? Why is it important to your project?

    In the conclusion of this article she talks about the projections for the future - number of tech jobs opening and what proportion of those positions must be filled to eliminate the gender gap. This is important for the reader in visualizing the change that must occur.

    The source comes from Fox News, a typically conservative but often times reliable news source. This has an ultimately positive effect on the credibility.

    Who is the author of the source? What can you find out about their credentials, background, and public presence online? How does this information affect the source's credibility?

    Peter Gasca is an entrepreneur focused on businesses in the tech fields. He has worked with many different company startups and has a lot of experience with technology based companies. This gives him considerable credibility to write about issues of technology. However, his involvement in feminism or other gender equalizing movements is not mentioned.

    When did the source come out? What else was going on in the world during that day, or week, or month that could have some effect or impact on this controversy? How does the specific time period play into the story?

    The article was published in October of 2015 which shows the persistent issues of geder equality in the workplace.

    This offers an opinion supporting that of the many liberal sources I have provided from a more conservative source. While this tends to be an issue focused on most by liberal organizations, it is still something addressed by more conservative sources.
