The Time Period

Exploring my topic on different global levels and incorporating different sources of contextual information, I can better understand the factors contributing to this controversy. Here I explore the local, national, and international levels of context.

Link us to TWO different local news stories (stories reported in the local news media in the place(s) you wrote about in Blog Post 3.9) that were published on or around the key dates in your controversy. Try to pick stories that might overlap or intersect with your controversy in some way (only if possible).
  • The San Jose Mercury News described the story of Adria Richards in 2013.
  • The San Jose Mercury News also published a story on “Lean In” a book on feminism published in 2013.

Link us to TWO different national news stories (stories that were affecting or of interest to the entire nation and reported in national news outlets) that were published on or around the key dates in your controversy. Try to pick stories that might overlap or intersect with your controversy in some way (only if possible).

  • USA Today reports on the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.
  • The Huffington Post reports on Facebook’s vow to crack down on hate speech about gender, sexuality, and rape.

Please clearly mark which links are national, which are local, which are national and which are global.

  • CNN reports on the New Dehli rape that ignited movements towards more laws protecting women’s rights.
  • Independent, a UK news source, reports Malala Yousafzai’s full speech at the UN encouraging education as the solution to many of the world’s problems.

In the blog post, use your own words to write a 100-150 word description of what else was going on in the world during the time period in which your story elapsed. Summarize the events of the news stories you're linking us to and talk about the time period on three levels - the local, the national and the global. Tell us the key details in these stories you've selected and whether or not these other stories might have any impact or affect on your controversy. DO NOT quote from any news stories or use anyone's words other than your own.

Local to California, there was a storm of conversation about feminism, both in response to Adria Richard’s tweet and Sheryl Sandberg’s book, “Lean In”. This demonstrated the push for more attention to women’s treatment in the workplace.

Within the United States, a lot of attention was drawn to the treatment of sexism and rape culture. Throughout the controversy surrounding the reauthorization of VACA and Facebook’s vow to start to crackdown on rape jokes, a shift in attitude towards sexism became apparent.

The reaction to the New Dehli rape and Malala’s speech showed the increasing global support for the feminist movement.

These show the greater feminist movement in response to the imposition of sexism and patriarchy. While a few tech guys may make uneducated comments about dongles and forking, there are still incredible people taking strides towards gender equality.
