Stakeholder #3

While I did not mention feminists in my web of stakeholders, they do have a stake in this issue. Constantly working to eliminate gender discrimination puts their stake at the core of the issue: continued gender inequality.

1. Can you describe this third stakeholder in 200-250 words? If they're an individual, vividly describe how they look, what they wear, how they move. Tell us how they sound, how they talk, what their mannerisms are. Conjure them in our mind's eye, by appealing to at least THREE of our FIVE senses. If the stakeholder is an institution or group, then describe the institution and how it appears in the world. How do people encounter this group or institution, digitally or physically? Describe their website or headquarters or something else that physically represents the group to the world at large.

Often perceived as granola, earthy, hippies who hate men and breath nothing but incense, feminists work towards gender equality. The common misconception is centered around the root of the word feminist. Because it does not explicitly include men or masculinity, it must be about female supremacy, right? Not quite. Feminists are part of the large movement working towards gender equality.

Feminism centers around the discrimination that has been present throughout history. Men have been in the majority and, as a result, treated with a greater amount of decency. Feminism works towards bridging the gap in the treatment of men and women. Their efforts are large and widespread. Encompassing luxury taxes on feminine hygiene products, differing wages between men and women, and, most importantly for this issue, women’s involvement in tech fields. As they seek out different ways to involve themselves in gender equality issues and provide support women struggling with the effects of sexism, they find considerable relatability in the issue of women’s treatment in and exclusion from tech fields.

While they do not focus solely on women in technology, their ultimate goal is to attain gender equity. By working with those directly invested in the involvement of women in technology, the can reach shared goals.

2. Can you identify THREE specific claims being made by this stakeholder? The claims should be public and about the specific story you're investigating. Provide direct quotes for three different claims or ideas made in public by this stakeholder. Each quote should be clearly hyperlinked to the original source.

Model View Culture published “An Open Letter on Feminism” which brings light to the issue of sexism in tech fields.  The Editor writes, “We want to help give voice to the people and organizations that are making change today instead of waiting for it to happen tomorrow.”

Feminism Approach To Technology describes their vision, “This is a world where all women have equal opportunities to learn, use and create technology, irrespective of their academic background, economic status or geographical location; an environment where women are not intimidated by new technologies but rather have an open mind to experiment with and benefit from them.”

CBS News describes, “A female developer was fired after tweeting about a group of men she said were making sexual comments at a computer programming conference, fueling an already vigorous debate about gender equality and culture in Silicon Valley.”

3. Can you explain how valid these claims are? Objectively, how much weight do these claims carry? How credible are they? Be specific. Think about how poorly or successfully the stakeholder cites FACTS, plays on our EMOTIONS, or presents themself as a CREDIBLE actor in the debate.

Most of the views expressed by feminists involved in the tech movement are based on fact and experience. They simultaneously appeal to our sense of logic and our sense of emotion. Because of their direct experience facing discrimination in tech fields and other areas, they are particularly credible sources in understanding the realities of the situation.

4. Can you explain how these claims are similar and/or different to the other stakeholders? Be clear and precise - does this stakeholder have anything in common with others involved in the debate? Who do they have the least in common with? Why?

The stake of feminists is unique in that the negative aspects of this disparity have affected them the most. Their experiences are the most personal. They have the most personal gain invested in changing the current standard.
